Protocol Engineer

About You

Are you excited by the prospect of designing and implementing protocols that enable new marketplaces for digital services? Do you have a strong interest in distributed systems, security, cryptography, cryptocurrencies and/or blockchains? Do you enjoy researching new techniques and concepts and then using the results to produce solutions for real-world problems? If so, you should consider joining Livepeer as a protocol engineer.

About Livepeer

Livepeer's mission is to make video streaming much more scalable and affordable with the help of decentralization. Today, companies across all industries, ranging from media to robotics to home surveillance are increasingly using video. However, it’s operationally expensive to build in house, and prohibitively expensive to outsource to centralized software services. We are building an open source, and decentralized network that enables any developer to build video applications at a fraction of the cost of existing software providers.

Livepeer is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer that is committed to inclusion and diversity. We are committed to provide a community and environment for mutual respect, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, physical and mental disability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, military and veteran status, and any other characteristic protected by applicable law. We believe diversity and inclusion are crucial to our success and seek to recruit/develop from a diverse candidate pool.

About the Role

Livepeer is looking for a talented protocol engineer to contribute to the Livepeer protocol. You will join the protocol team in researching and implementing solutions to problems inherent to a open and permissionless marketplace for video infrastructure services without any central intermediaries. Problems you will work on include fair exchange payments for live and on-demand video transcoding, and verifiable video processing. The Livepeer whitepaper lays a foundation of the protocol. Currently, the team is working on the Streamflow proposal that will dramatically enhance the scalability and affordability of the network, so that it can power high scale video streaming applications with over 10x - 50x infrastructure cost savings.

As a member of the Livepeer team, you will work with serial entrepreneurs and experienced technologists from different backgrounds, all with the same goal of shifting the paradigm for digital video through decentralization. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting edge technology that will unlock business models that were never before possible. This will be one of the first examples where blockchain disrupts a major industry by out performing existing technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Research in areas such as fair exchange payments for digital services, verifiable computation, staking mechanisms and layer 2 blockchain scaling
  • Write smart contracts and client software that implement research informed protocol designs
  • Support the integration of new protocol designs into the deployed Livepeer protocol
  • Learn and program in Solidity and Go
  • Contributing to Livepeer in an open source style

Requirements

  • Is able to execute based on a research agenda and implementation goals
  • Is able to read and analyze literature from academia and industry pertaining to relevant research areas such as fair exchange payments for digital services, verifiable computation, staking mechanisms and layer 2 blockchain scaling (deep expertise in all of these areas is not required, but you will be expected to become proficient in them)
  • Is able to think adversarially and design systems with the expectation that actors will try to cheat and bypass rules
  • Is comfortable with the foundational concepts of public blockchains such as Ethereum
  • Is comfortable with taking ownership of a research area and taking an idea from conception all the way through implementation
  • Has experience writing smart contracts and/or systems software
  • Has great communications skills and functions well in a distributed team, sharing knowledge and clear communicating ideas to others through publishing content.
  • Has an interest in cryptocurrency and is excited about diving into the Ethereum ecosystem
